Big Bang Theory's Penny and Leonard to tie the knot

Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting gave viewers a sneak preview.

After nine years and countless break-ups, the geekiest nuptials in sitcom history will finally happen when Penny and Leonard tie the knot in the new season of The Big Bang Theory.

The ninth series of the hit sitcom premieres next week in the US, and in the season opener, The Matrimonial Momentum, Penny (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) will get hitched in Las Vegas in a spur-of-the-moment ceremony.

Despite Leonard's confession at the end of season eight that he had kissed a woman when he was away at sea, the pair tie the knot in a dingy Vegas wedding chapel, streaming the event online to the rest of the gang back home.

Cuoco-Sweeting posted a photo on Instagram of her and Galecki in wedding outfits, and the caption "We're back baby!!! Don't forget to tune into @bigbangtheory_cbs tonight- I mean it when I say, I've waited for this moment since the pilot nine years in the making!!"

The Big Bang Theory's executive producer Steve Molaro has revealed some other highlights from the much anticipated wedding episode, including the fact that Leonard has prepared his own vows, but Penny is put on the spot to come up with something.

"She had no idea there would be vows ... and what comes out is truly wonderful and lovely," Molaro told the US website TVGuide.com.

"Kaley was just remarkable and so good at it. It was one of those things where I was so excited about that I had told her weeks before that I was really excited for their vows and she was so cute, like, 'Don't tell me. I wanna read it on my own.' She just destroyed it."

Molaro also revealed that the pair's honeymoon is short-lived when Penny brings up The Other Woman on their wedding night. "Leonard tries to diffuse the situation, but it's clearly not working. It's not the way you want your wedding day to go," Molaro said.

The Big Bang Theory is the highest-rating sitcom since Friends ended more than 10 years ago, and regularly pulls in more than 23 million viewers in the US alone.

In Australia, the Seven Network earlier this month secured the free-to-air rights to the first seven seasons of the sitcom - launching them on both their main channel and digital channel, 7Mate, next month - and will air the eighth season next year, while Nine, which has aired the program since its debut here, confusingly retains the rights to the upcoming ninth (and subsequent) seasons.

The last time the rights to a series were split across two networks was when Seven and nine had to 'share' the rights to Friends.

The first episode of The Big Bang Theory's ninth series will air next Monday in the US and will be fast-tracked to Channel Nine.
